A team of paleontologists formed by the Smithsonian Tropical Research have found fossils of various species that lived more than 20 million years ago in Panama.

Such a discovery will provide data to better understand how biodiversity and geological formation have developed during the tertiary period.

Five years ago the authorities of the Panama Canal began a study to find remains of fossils, rocks, shells and wood. Among other objects, the scientists found teeth belonging to a huge extinct shark and the remains of a jaw from a horse raised in the area millions of years ago and named "Anchitherium clarencei”.
